Well I decided to get the year off to a good start. We had seen the new year in on the beach at Betty’s which was very pleasant though I was not feeling so well and started off slowly the 1st of Jan. I went down for a surf later but it was really messy. But great to be in the water. There was a stiff North West blowing and the beach was no place to be. So I went up to Bass Lake again sat on the tailgate of my bakkie and painted this:

Families were picnicing on the grass and again there was mellow laughter and fun all around.
This is on Arches Rough 300gm 280x380mm.
A good start to 2012 I think.

We came through to stay with friends in Bety’s Bay for new year. It seemed like a good idea to finish the year on a high note. Which called for a watercolour. So I had a magic surf, then I swam across Bass Lake. And then I sat on the roof of my bakkie and painted it.
While I sat painting, there was a hectic game of volley ball going on on the grass below with shouts of encouragement and peels of laughter. A beautiful sound.
Here is the last painting I did in 2011:

At last I have begun:

Each of the paintings is on a full sheet of 300gm Arches 300gm rough.
Hopefully tomorrow I will have a chance to progress this.
Here is how it looks today 24 September. This is a not a great photo – I had to climb up on a step ladder to get enough height to fit all three paintings in.

I have been out to Betty’s Bay again and have taken some photos in the late afternoon. It takes a while to become familiar with a new scene to paint.
To see how I am doing I put the paintings against my bookshelf and look at them from outside my studio – like this:

And here we are late on Wednesday 28 September 2011. Hey! the world didn’t end today!!! Phew – someone told me that Planet X was suppose to plough into planet Earth today. Bah! – Though I suppose we still have an hour of today left around here.
Anyway – here is the painting as it looks now:

Well at last I am working again.
I have been asked to do a painting of Bass Lake, a freshwater lake behind the beach dune in Betty’s Bay. And here is how it all came together, this first go at it…

On Saturday I took a drive through to Betty’s Bay to take some photo’s for a commission. I had a pleasant walk on the beach and had a look at the views from some of the cottages on the dune. I was leaving when I stopped to look at the views across Bass Lake, behind the dune. Then I decided to sit on the roof of my bakkie and I did this quick sketch.
