Kogelbaai rocks – a demo

Posted by Stephen Quirke on April 11, 2011 under Art, Demonstration, Kogelbaai, painting, seascape, watercolor, watercolour | 5 Comments to Read

Here is a painting  I completed in my studio over the weekend.  Included in this posting are some of the steps along the way.  I have been asked to do a number of watercolour demos lately so I have looked at this scene from the point of view of starting and completing a finished work in about an hour.

More recently I have created a presentation in which I do a painting and relate the insights on what makes good watercolours to what it takes to successfully discuss, design and implement an effective team strategy.

I have included some of the steps in the process in this posting.

This painting was done on a 560×380 mm sheet of Arches 300gm Cold Pressed.

“There – I’ve fixed it” at The Pipe

Posted by Stephen Quirke on March 18, 2011 under Art, en plein air, painting, seascape, Strand Pipe beach, watercolor, watercolour | 6 Comments to Read

Last year, someone in our municipality had a rush of blood to the brain and decided that The Pipe needed  a walkway to the beach.  So they got one of their friends – no I mean – they put the job out to tender and the contractor got busy.

family at The Pipe

I had another long and enlivening chat at the pipe on Friday and had a chance to do this painting of the folks on the beach before having a quick goof and going home.  That is a word from my school days – “hey guys, lets go for a goof” (a swim).

tête-à-tête at the Pipe – or should that be ‘à la Conduite’

Posted by Stephen Quirke on February 14, 2011 under Art, en plein air, figure, seascape, Strand Pipe beach, watercolor, watercolour | 2 Comments to Read

On Saturday I did not want to surf as I am nursing a cracked rib (from surfing).  So we all went for a swim and then Aura took a walk up the beach while Ethan and his mate went to play on the Supertube.  So I had an hour.

I found a place near this group of people chatting.

Henrique

Posted by Stephen Quirke on January 15, 2011 under Art, en plein air, figure, painting, seascape, Strand Pipe beach, watercolor, watercolour | 4 Comments to Read

I had a surf this morning and we all went down again this afternoon.   The sea was quite messy, although the guys were out.  The rest of my family went for a walk down the beach and I decided to sit on the dune at the entrance to the beach to do a painting.  As I arrived Henrique, the surf coach, was there so I asked him if he would like to star in a watercolour.  And he would.  So here he is.

This is 380 x 560 mm on 185gm Arches Hot Pressed.

And he sat so nicely that I gave him the painting.

Muizenberg corner on a Summer’s day

Yesterday we all went out to meet the cousins and Torill at Muizenberg.  The waves were small but it was a beautiful day so we sat and chatted and I did this painting.

This is 280 x 380 mm on 185gm Arches Hot Pressed.  (loving the hot-pressed).
